My name is Jeremy Steffen and I am an oil painter based in Chicago, IL. I grew up in a small town in Indiana and moved to the city as soon as I found a chance. Here I’ve lived many different lives, but none as prominent as my life as an artist. I’ve been impressed with Chicago diverse culture and It’s become the subject of my work. I use people I know best and attempt to capture their metaphysical and physical attributes through the manipulation of color and medium. I want my work to reveal a beauty that goes beyond human perception. It both amazes me and discourages me what our eyes limit us from seeing. I use methods of sanding and the thinning of medium causing drips in order to show the viewer my processes and to emphasize the subject. Lately I’ve been doing this through a technique I’ve developed called color separation, where I choose two apposing colors and separate them slowing from the middle leaving some natural tones. I want to teach people a little more about painting and how it can be used as a tool to see what our eyes can’t. I’m at the beginning of a long journey, but I’ve already made huge progress. I want to share it with the world.
